While the fear of losing one's sight is a daunting prospect for many, some remarkable individuals have not only faced the challenges of vision loss but have emerged as extraordinary achievers. And this time aroud, we shine a professional light on an inspire figure who have defied adversity to accomplish remarkable feats despite their visual impairments.

S Rishan Ponraj, a 24-year-old Bachelor of Arts (English) graduate from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), exemplifies unwavering determination and success despite facing visual impairments.

Born with cataracts and glaucoma, Rishan not only excelled in his academic pursuits but also secured first place in a Northern Level 'Braille' reading competition during his studies.

Undeterred by his challenges, Rishan embarked on his university journey amid the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, navigating virtual learning for four years. In his final year, with cross-border authorization and adherence to specific standard operating procedures (SOP), Rishan had the opportunity to experience on-campus learning and face-to-face lectures.

While advancements in technology have facilitated learning for visually impaired individuals, Rishan acknowledges the persistent challenges, particularly when dealing with reading materials containing diagrams. He expresses gratitude for the supportive friends who assisted in adapting descriptions from diagrams to accommodate the capabilities of screen reader applications.

During USM's 61st Convocation Ceremony, Rishan reflected on his educational journey, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and seizing opportunities. He encourages others facing similar circumstances to pursue education and explore various fields according to their abilities.

Hailing from Dengkil, Selangor, Rishan highlights the increased opportunities for disabled individuals to pursue higher education. In imparting advice, he urges aspiring learners not to give up, emphasising the value of seeking solutions in the face of challenges as an invaluable life lesson.

Rishan's story stands as an inspiration for our upcoming generation which can lead to remarkable achievements in education and beyond.
