Popular Tamil actor and comedian Robo Shankar passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025, in Chennai. He was just 46.

According to reports, Shankar fainted on the set of his latest shoot and was rushed to a private hospital, but could not be saved. The news came as a shock not only to his fans but also to his colleagues and friends in the film industry.

Shankar’s journey was one of inspiration for all of us. Born in a modest household, he first caught the public’s eye with his electrifying robot dance moves, which earned him the nickname ‘Robo.’ What began as a playful moniker eventually became part of his identity, one that audiences would associate with humour, charm, and a distinctive style of comedy.

His true breakthrough came through television. On the stage of Kalakka Povadhu Yaaru, a show known for discovering stand-up comedy talent, Shankar won hearts with his physical humour and magnetic presence. From there, cinema naturally embraced him. He went on to act in memorable films like Velaikkaran, Kalakalappu 2, Maari 2, and Iravin Nizhal. His final screen appearance was in the recently released Sotta Sotta Nenaiyuthu, a film that now feels like a parting gift from a man who never lost his passion for performance.

The film fraternity expressed its grief in heartfelt tributes. Kamal Haasan, one of cinema’s greatest icons, shared a moving Tamil poem to bid farewell to Shankar. He wrote about how the name ‘Robo’ was just a mask, but Shankar himself was like a younger brother. In his words, “Just because you have gone doesn’t mean you have left me,” capturing the essence of the bond Shankar shared with his peers. His poem ended with a poignant reminder: “As you have left tomorrow for me, tomorrow is ours.”

What made Robo Shankar special was his ability to bring joy. He was someone who could make people forget their worries, even if only for a short while. His humour was never just entertainment—it was a bridge of connection, a gift he gave generously.

He may be gone too soon, but the laughter he gave will continue to echo. For his fans, colleagues, and the generations of performers he has inspired, Robo Shankar will always be remembered with a smile.
