The Ministry of Health (KKM) has clarified that Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), currently causing concern in China, is not a new disease. However, the number of cases in Malaysia has been rising, with 327 positive samples detected in 2024, compared to 225 cases in 2023.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), symptoms of hMPV include:

- Coughing
- Fever
- Stuffy nose
- Wheezing

In severe cases, patients may develop bronchitis or pneumonia. Those most vulnerable include:

- Infants and the elderly
- Individuals with weaker immune systems
- People with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or emphysema

How the Virus Spreads?

- Droplets or aerosols from coughing or sneezing
- Close contact with infected individuals
- Exposure to contaminated environments

The incubation period is 3 to 5 days, meaning symptoms can develop within this timeframe after exposure.

Malaysian digital creator Sathesh Steve G shared his personal experience with hMPV, urging the public to seek medical help immediately if they exhibit symptoms.

“Guys, a gentle reminder. This is what happened to me, I suffered for 4 days. Please, if you have these symptoms, don’t wait. Go to the nearest hospital and get treatment as soon as possible,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Fortunately, Sathesh has since recovered and is now feeling better.

If you or your loved ones having any symptoms of hMPV, especially if you belong to a high-risk group, consult a healthcare professional without delay. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent severe complications.
