In Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, stands the well-known Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple. Indeed, a place filled with devotion, history, and mystery. One of the most talked-about stories among the devotees here is how the head of Goddess Kali’s head slowly turned to the left after being installed.
When the temple was first built, Kali Amma’s statue was placed facing straight towards the main road. However, as the years went by, her head gradually turned to the left, towards a nearby crematorium. This wasn’t a mistake or due to how the statue was placed. Devotees strongly believe that Amma herself turned her head to look over the crematorium, as a way of blessing and protecting the souls who leave the world.
Some devotees say that this shows Amma’s caring and protective nature. Even after death, she watches over people and makes sure they are guided in their next journey.

A long-time devotee, who has been visiting the temple since she was a child, shared that before the temple existed, there was only a tree with a carved image of Kali Amma. People used to pray to that tree. Later, when the temple was built and the statue installed, Amma’s gaze was straight ahead until it began to turn on its own.
Another local, a street vendor near the temple, shared a chilling yet beautiful experience. One night around 3am, while chilling at his shop, he and his friends heard the sound of anklets nearby. As they looked around, they saw a figure walking past a parked lorry and they believe it was Amma, doing her nightly round to protect the area.
“From that day, I knew she’s always watching over us,” he said.
Though Kali is known for her fierce form, devotees believe she is also a gentle mother. The one who destroys negativity and ego and stands by her people through their toughest times. This story of Kali Amma in Sentul is more than just a temple tale.
