Out of all the 12 Shivarathiris that's observed in a year, Mahashivarathiri gives the most spiritual significance of all.
As per the legend, Mahashivarathiri is the day where Lord Shiva saved the universe by consuming a pot of poison which emerged from the churning of the ocean by devas and asuras. Some also believe that it's the day Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvathi.
This day is celebrated to honour Lord Shiva and the devotees stay awake all night while performing poojas, chanting and meditating.
