At the Thug Life audio launch held yesterday, at Sai Ram Engineering College in Chennai, actor Silambarasan, delivered an emotional and heartfelt speech that resonated with fans and colleagues alike. The event marked a significant moment in his career as he shared the stage with legendary actor Kamal Haasan and acclaimed director Mani Ratnam, under whom he is set to appear in Thug Life, releasing this June.
Amid thunderous applause, Simbu began by expressing gratitude to Thug Life producers Madras Talkies, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Raaj Kamal International’s Mahendran, and his co-stars. The actor, known for his resilience despite facing several controversies over the years, particularly moved the audience when he recounted the life-changing phone call from Mani Ratnam that came at a low point in his career.
“There was a time when producers were hesitant to work with me. People spoke about banning me. At that very moment, I got a call from Madras Talkies. I didn’t believe it was real until I met Mani sir. Despite the uncertainty surrounding me then, he took a chance. I will never forget that,” said Simbu, visibly moved. Simbu also recalled a moment from his childhood, when he watched Mani Ratnam’s Anjali and felt heartbroken for not being cast in the film as a child actor.
“That day, I cried thinking I’d never get a chance to work with Mani sir. But life has its own timing, and here I am,” he said. He continued by thanking Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman, whom he credited for giving him his first opportunity to sing outside of his father T. Rajendar’s productions. “Rahman sir was the first to believe in me beyond my family.
He introduced me as a playback singer and I’ve sung over 150 songs since. During a tough time in my life, when the ‘Beep Song’ controversy hit, he stood by me and released Thalli Pogathey. That meant the world to me,” he shared. Speaking about Kamal Haasan, Simbu described the Thug Life experience as humbling and inspiring. He recalled a scene in which he had to imitate Kamal Haasan’s mannerisms in front of the veteran actor.
Overwhelmed, he struggled to perform until Mani Ratnam urged him to do it again. “Kamal sir came to me afterward and encouraged me to give it my best. That moment will always stay with me,” Simbu said. He also recounted a scene that required him to grab Kamal Haasan by the throat. “I kept hesitating, afraid I might hurt him. But Mani sir insisted we do multiple takes. Sorry, Kamal sir, it was because of Mani sir,” he said with a smile.
Simbu went on to pay tribute to his parents, T. Rajendar and Usha Rajendar. “There were times I wished I had a normal childhood, going to school like other kids. But my parents introduced me to acting early. Today, standing here, acting with Kamal Haasan sir:
"I realise it’s all come full circle. I thank them for shaping my journey.” He addressed the buzz around his character Rangaraya Sakthivel and the speculation that he is stepping into Kamal Haasan’s shoes. Simbu clarified: “There’s no replacing legends. Just like no one could replace Sivaji Ganesan in Thevar Magan, Kamal sir has created a legacy through decades of dedication. I’m not here to take anyone’s place, only to walk my own path and make my mentors proud.”
Ending his speech on a powerful note, Simbu acknowledged the unwavering support of his fans. “You’ve stood by me through everything. Thug Life is the beginning of a new chapter, and I promise not to let you down. I’ll ensure my films don’t face delays and continue to grow with you by my side.”
