A trio of pupils from SJK(T) Rawang in Selangor, have built a portable Ayurvedic air cooler with waste items from a scrapyard.
The students, namely Vyshnavi Vaneah Nithiananthan, 12, and her friends, Yhuvhen Vijaya Vikneswaran and Kanniesh Theeran Kannigeswaran, both 11, spent almost two months designing the device, which emits a herbal fragrance and comes with a motion sensor that switches the device on when it detects movement.
This motion detector technology helps users save on their electricity bills, reported the New Straits Times (NST).
Fresh herbs like neem, lemongrass, and eucalyptus that serve as natural purifiers were included in the cooler device, which recently bagged the Gold Award and Best Invention Award (Junior Category — Science and Technology cluster) at the 2nd International Research Invention, Innovation and Exhibition.
According to the report, the idea for the device came after Vyshnavi heard her father lamenting the rising electricity bills due to the frequent use of air-conditioners at her home.
Wanting to do something about the problem, the girl got together with two like-minded friends and sought the assistance of former engineer Maheshwaran Jayaraman, 46, who established the Rainbow Technical and Science Development Academy to teach children basic technical skills, to seek a cost-effective air cooler device.
Maheshwaran told the portal that the project was challenging iniriallt, as the team ended up burning some electrical components during the first few attempts, and had to make last-minute changes to the air cooler's design.
The device can be used both indoors and outdoors, and can work with either batteries or with a power supply, he added.
Next, the young inventors are working on reducing the size of the air cooler, so that every student can have a portable air cooler in class.
Congratulations on the well-deserved win children. May you go on to reach greater heights in the future.
