Murugan

In life, challenges are inevitable. Yet, it is through faith and devotion that one finds the strength to overcome them. Among the many sacred observances dedicated to him, Shashti Viratham holds a special place. It is widely believed that sincere observance of this fast has the power to transform one’s destiny and remove obstacles from life’s path.

Shashti is the sixth day in the lunar cycle, occurring twice every month.

  • The Shashti that follows the new moon is known as Valarpirai (Shukla Paksha) Shashti
  • The one that follows the full moon is called Theipirai (Krishna Paksha) Shashti

This sacred day is considered highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Muruga, as the number six itself is associated with strength, prosperity, and divine blessings. In astrology, it is linked with the planet Venus, representing abundance and grace.

Shashti Viratham is observed with deep devotion by those seeking divine intervention in various aspects of life.

It is believed that:

  • Obstacles to marriage are removed
  • Couples are blessed with children
  • Financial stability and prosperity improve
  • Health issues are eased
  • Enemies and negative influences are overcome

Above all, the observance brings peace of mind and strengthens one’s spiritual connection.

Devotees begin the day early with a purifying bath and prayers. At home, Lord Muruga is worshipped in his divine form along with Valli and Deivanai.

Common practices include:

  • Offering fragrant flowers and lighting ghee lamps
  • Preparing simple offerings such as fruits or sweets
  • Chanting sacred hymns like Kanda Shashti Kavasam and Shanmuga Kavasam
  • Visiting a nearby Murugan temple for darshan

Those unable to observe a full fast may consume milk and fruits. Evening prayers and offerings mark the completion of the fast.

On this sacred day, devotees may:

  • Offer garlands of flowers to Lord Muruga
  • Light lamps for divine blessings
  • Prepare prasadam such as sweet pongal or lemon rice and share it with others

Speaking about Theipirai Shashti, in particular, is considered powerful for overcoming difficulties and gaining mental strength.

Devotees believe that through sincere observance:

  • Marriage alliances are fulfilled
  • Childless couples are blessed
  • Financial struggles are reduced
  • Success is achieved in endeavours
  • Mental peace replaces anxiety and stress

Shashti Viratham is not merely a ritual, but a journey of faith, discipline, and surrender. It reminds devotees that with the grace of Lord Muruga, even the most difficult challenges can be overcome.

As the saying goes, “Velavan removes all obstacles” not just in words, but in the lived experiences of countless devotees.
