As we approach the joyous occasion of Deepavali, we are pleased to announce the full list of the Top 10 Ulagam Short Films, selected to be aired on Astro Vaanavil. The selection process was incredibly competitive, with a multitude of remarkable submissions received during the contest period. After a rigorous evaluation, we are excited to reveal the winners and top contenders of the Ulagam Short Film Contest 2024.

Leading the pack is Dunesraaj, director of MGR Murukku Kadai, who has secured the title of Champion. Close behind is Thulasi, director of Sonna Puriyathu, as the 1st Runner-Up, and Veronica, director of Thanimai, taking the spot as 2nd Runner-Up.

This year’s submissions have truly showcased the immense creativity and talent present in Malaysia’s filmmaking community. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the Top 10 Ulagam Short Films chosen for this year’s telecast:

MGR Murukku Kadai directed by Dunesraaj | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 31 Oct, 8.30pm

When their grandfather, a Muruku seller, breaks his arms, three cousins step in to help run the shop. As they struggle to make Muruku in time for Deepavali, a persistent customer demands his order be delivered immediately. Chaos ensues, but the trio is determined to save the day and ensure their customers enjoy the festive treat.






Sonna Puriyathu directed by Thulasi | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 31 Oct, 8.45pm

Prabhu finds himself trapped in a time loop on Deepavali eve, reliving the same day over and over with no idea why. Confused and desperate, he encounters a mysterious man who tells him that to break free, he must complete a series of tasks. As Prabhu takes on these challenges, he uncovers clues that might hold the key to escaping his endless nightmare.





Thanimai directed by Veronica | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 30 Oct, 8.45pm

An elderly woman faces the harsh reality of loneliness in her old age, as she is left to manage all her household chores by herself, even during Deepavali. Despite having a son, she must carry the weight of her responsibilities alone, highlighting the emotional distance and isolation she endures during what should be a festive time.





Nenjam Kondaduthey directed by Khesshen | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 29 Oct, 8.45pm

Krish, burdened by struggles at work and home, finds himself out late one evening. He encounters Mathi, who, despite having lost her family in a tragic accident, remains remarkably positive. Inspired by her resilience and outlook on life, Krish learns the secret behind her strength and determined to transform his own life for the better.






Athu Ingatha Irukku directed by Benaiah | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 28 Oct, 8.30pm

After the passing of their father, a family faces a series of unexplained events in their home. The situation becomes clearer when their cousin visits and helps them understand the mysterious occurrences, offering them comfort and closure.





Madhavasuran directed by Shawn Ashwin Das | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 27 Oct, 8.30pm

On the eve of Deepavali, Madhavan and his family are attacked by a mysterious man. Madhavan and his brothers bravely fight off the intruders, protecting their loved ones and ensuring their safety during the festive season.




Boss, Deepavali Boss directed by Hegaarooban | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 28 Oct, 8.45pm


A stingy boss plans to withhold bonuses from his staff for Deepavali. However, after seeing visions in his dream in which he experiences the hardships of his employees, he realizes the impact of his decision. Filled with remorse, he decides to reward his staff with the bonuses they deserve, embracing the spirit of the festival.


Oru Nodi directed by Geethashini | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 29 Oct, 8.30pm

While busy decorating his home for Deepavali, a father witnesses a horrifying event involving his daughter. Given a second chance, he must use this opportunity to make the right choices and save her, determined to protect his family and ensure their safety.





Susila directed by Krishna Kummar | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 30 Oct, 8.30pm

Susila is left at a shelter home by her son, following the insistence of her daughter-in-law. However, during Deepavali, their perspective shifts after visiting a relative. Moved by the relative’s wisdom on the importance of family bonds, they bring Susila back home, realizing the value of maintaining close relationships.

Oru Car-Um 4 Perum directed by Gopal | Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) | 27 Oct, 8.45pm

Four strangers share a car ride to visit their families for Deepavali. As they arrive, they observe their loved ones mourning the loss of those who have passed away over the past year. The strangers come to realize that they themselves are departed souls. Finding solace in seeing their families begin to heal and move on, the souls finally achieve peace.
