Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his dear friend and former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, fondly known to the nation as Pak Lah.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Anwar shared the emotional memory of his last visit with Tun Abdullah, recalling the frail state of the elder statesman.

“He was visibly unwell, and the sight of him in that condition was deeply moving. Yet, as our hands touched, his fading eyes still radiated a glow of affection and an undying sense of peace.”

Anwar described Pak Lah as a rare calming presence in the often-harsh world of politics. Despite having once stood on opposing sides, he noted that Tun Abdullah welcomed him with grace and compassion.

“Such was the greatness of spirit of a true statesman.”

Reflecting on Pak Lah’s legacy, Anwar said he was far more than a political leader. He was a man of deep humanity who reshaped the narrative of political leadership in Malaysia.

“With his vision of Islam Hadhari, he successfully bridged the ideals of progress and development with the enduring values that anchor our society.”

During his tenure, Tun Abdullah spearheaded key reforms in the judiciary, improved transparency in governance, and worked to strengthen national institutions. His leadership under the Ninth Malaysia Plan focused not only on economic growth but also on the development of human capital and rural communities.

Anwar also highlighted Pak Lah’s commitment to openness, including efforts to create more space for media freedom and public discourse.

Yet above all his achievements, Anwar said Tun Abdullah exemplified what it truly means to lead with humility and humanity.

“He led with a face free of anger, hands that did not cling to power, and a voice that never rose even under immense pressure. He never added to my suffering with harsh words or condemnation, even during the darkest periods of my life.”

“Such was Pak Lah’s character, always choosing peace, even when it would have been easier to retaliate.”

To Tun Jeanne, his children including Khairy Jamaluddin, and the entire family, Anwar extended his deepest condolences, stating that the nation mourns alongside them.

“Farewell, Pak Lah. Malaysia owes you a profound debt of gratitude for your wisdom, service, and enduring compassion.”
