Many people cite issues in the family as hurdles to advance in life.
However, Umaa Saraswathy Kumarasamy's achievement has rubbished such notions by obtaining a Master's degree in Corporate Communications from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) despite shouldering the burden of managing her parents, both of whom are classified as disabled (OKU).
The 27-year-old's father has been bedridden due to illness, while her mother suffers from mental-related issues, reported the university's portal. Even then, the couple managed to raise four children.
"I know that education is the key that can change my life. I'm also well aware of my family's shortcomings.
"Obtaining the Master's degree is no easy feat for me, especially when I had to juggle my studies between a very busy career in the customer service industry," she said.
"I consider obtaining this Master's an achievement, especially when I had to look after my sick parents. Success does not come to you, you have to work hard to achieve it," Umaa Saraswathy added.
She was one of the thousands of graduates who obtained their well-deserved accolades. Umaa Saraswathy attended the ceremony alone as her father passed away just two months ago, and her mother could not make it due to health issues.
Despite her father's passing, Umaa Saraswathy said her achievement will help her put her family on the right track.
"You too can (achieve). Just get out of your comfort zone to get what you have always wanted in life. It is not easy, but keep trying and never, ever give up," she said.
Wise words indeed, Umaa Saraswathy. An extremely laudable achievement indeed, and for that, millions of congratulations. May your future be paved with nothing but success.
