Murugan Birth

Vaikasi Visagam, the divine birth star of Lord Murugan, the warrior of wisdom and protector of dharma.

For millions of devotees, Vaikasi Visakam is more than mythology. It is sacred history that symbolises the triumph of divine grace over darkness.

Let’s look at the sacred birth of Lord Murugan

Ancient scriptures narrate that long ago, the demon king Soorapadman performed intense penance and received a powerful boon from Lord Brahma. According to the boon, he could only be defeated by a son born to Lord Shiva.

Empowered by this protection, Soorapadman and his demon forces began spreading fear across the three worlds. The Devas were imprisoned, celestial order was disturbed, and the cries for help reached Lord Shiva.

Moved by the suffering of the worlds, Lord Shiva opened His third eye and released six divine sparks of fire.

The brilliance of these sparks was so powerful that even the gods could not withstand their energy. The sacred sparks were carried to Saravana Poigai, the mystical lake of reeds, where they transformed into six radiant infant boys.

The six divine children were lovingly nurtured by the celestial maidens known as the Karthigai Pengal.

When Goddess Parvati embraced all six children together, they united into a single divine form with six faces and twelve arms, Lord Shanmugha, also known as Murugan, Arumugan and Subramanya.

The war against Soorapadman

As the protector destined to restore cosmic balance, Lord Murugan received the sacred Vel from Goddess Parvati.

Armed with divine wisdom and spiritual power, He marched against Soorapadman and his powerful demon armies, including Tarakasura and Singamukhasura.

The Vel, symbolising wisdom and divine truth, destroyed the forces of evil and restored peace to the worlds. Yet Murugan’s victory carried a deeper spiritual meaning. Rather than merely destroying His enemies, Murugan transformed them through grace.

Soorapadman was transformed into the peacock, which became Murugan’s sacred vehicle, while another demonic force became the rooster emblem carried on His banner.

These symbols remind devotees that Lord Murugan not only destroys negativity but transforms ignorance into spiritual awakening. This divine victory and sacred birth are commemorated as Vaikasi Visagam.
