“Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way”
This Teacher’s Day, we honour a remarkable educator whose story is touching hearts across the nation. Meet Mr. Prakash Surriyamurthy, a visually impaired tutor from Johor who has been transforming lives through education for over 16 years. Despite his visual impairment, Mr. Prakash’s unwavering spirit and commitment to teaching have made him a beacon of hope for many students struggling with Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah (History).
What began as a means to earn a side income soon became a lifelong mission. Initially passionate about counselling and motivational speaking, Mr. Prakash frequently engaged with university students and NGOs. While helping academically challenged youth in Bahasa Malaysia, he discovered his true calling, education. Encouraged by positive feedback and the visible progress of his students, Mr. Prakash took the bold step to pursue teaching full-time.
Over the years, he added History to his portfolio, building a reputation as a dedicated and effective tutor. Throughout his school years, Mr. Prakash never let his visual impairment hold him back. He made full use of braille materials and volunteer readers, always staying ahead with determination and grit. His academic discipline laid a solid foundation for the educator he is today. Breaking societal expectations, he chose not to follow the conventional career paths typically offered to the visually impaired.
Instead, he carved out a space in education, a field where he could make a personal impact and connect meaningfully with others. He believes that education is the key to building stronger communities, and he’s proof that one teacher can indeed make a difference. Of course, the road hasn’t always been easy. One of his toughest challenges was earning the trust of parents, many of whom doubted his ability due to his condition. But Mr. Prakash let his results speak for themselves, his students consistently excelled, and his reputation grew stronger with each success story.
For Mr. Prakash, teaching is more than a job, it’s a life philosophy. “The more you give, the more you get,” he often says. The joy of teaching and sharing knowledge keeps him inspired. His history lessons often spark thoughtful discussions that bridge generational gaps, deepening both his and his students’ understanding of the world.
At 43, Mr. Prakash continues to dream big. He aims not only to help students excel academically but to nurture kind, thoughtful individuals who contribute positively to society. He also hopes to grow his platform as a motivational speakerencoura, ging others to embrace challenges, pursue their passions, and never give up.
