At the recent JFW Movie Awards 2025, actress Simran took a moment during her acceptance speech to shed light on a painful personal experience, one that has since sparked conversations across the entertainment industry.

While accepting the award for her standout performance in a negative role in Andhagan, Simran shared how a fellow actress responded insensitively to a compliment she had sent. Simran had messaged the actress to praise her recent performance, expressing genuine admiration. However, the reply she received was unexpectedly dismissive: “It’s better than playing aunty roles.”

Simran admitted she was taken aback and deeply hurt by the remark but chose not to react immediately. Instead, she addressed the issue on stage, stating, “There’s nothing wrong in playing aunty or mother roles. It is far better than doing meaningless ‘dabba’ roles.” Her firm words were met with applause, as she emphasized the importance of depth and dignity in the characters she chooses.

Referring to her acclaimed role as a mother in Kannathil Muthamittal, Simran highlighted how powerful and fulfilling such roles can be, regardless of age. She also made a pointed observation about how the industry often undermines roles that reflect maturity and emotional depth.

Her use of the term “dabba” - a colloquial expression implying something empty or trivial, quickly caught the attention of netizens. Many speculated that it may have been a veiled reference to Dabba Cartel, a recent Netflix release starring actress Jyothika. While Simran did not name anyone directly, the timing has led to considerable discussion online.

Simran’s comments have reignited a larger conversation around ageism, role-shaming, and the undervaluation of older female characters in film. Her speech was widely praised for its honesty and poise, further cementing her legacy as not just a versatile actress, but a voice of integrity in the industry.
