Astro customers can look forward to the premiere of a local Tamil documentary, Thaipusa Yaathirai on 20 January, 7pm on Astro Vaanavil (Ch 201) via TV, Astro GO and On Demand.

Directed by Maran Perianen, the documentary series revolves around a family, a ‘Kaavadi’ maker, and an actress who embark on a remarkable spiritual journey to understand their devotion towards Lord Muruga. ‘Kanthan Saranam’, the first episode, is about enthusiastic parents who educate their son on the science behind celebrating Thaipusam and the significance of vows and penance as a part of the spiritual journey. Meanwhile, ‘Kaavadiyam Kaavadi’, the second episode features a real-life ‘Kaavadi’ maker who shares insights on the philosophies behind penance and ways to carry ‘Kaavadi’ during Thaipusam. The final episode, ‘Kantha Vel’, stars popular actress, Pashini Sivakumar who, herself, is intrigued by ‘Puranas’, stories of ancient Indian literature, depicting the roots of Thaipusam.
