Prominently known as one of the 108 sacred Shakti Peeths of Goddess Durga, the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam holds immense religious significance. According to Hindu mythology, the temple is believed to have been built by Kamdev (the God of Love) with the help of the celestial architect Vishwakarma. Legend also says that the demon king Narakasura constructed a stone pathway, known as mekhela ujowa poth, from the foothills to the temple in his desire to marry Goddess Kamakhya.
Let's have a look at the unique worship at Kamakhya Devi temple..
Unlike many other temples, Kamakhya Devi Temple does not house an idol of the Goddess. Instead, devotees worship the yoni (vulva) of Goddess Sati, represented by a stone. This yoni symbol holds deep spiritual meaning, as it is believed to embody the Goddess's energy. Worshippers who view, touch, or offer prayers to this sacred stone are said to receive the Goddess’s grace and attain spiritual proximity to her, along with the potential for salvation.
The temple is also home to 64 Yoginis and the 10 Mahavidyas, making it a center for deep spiritual practices. According to the Kalika Purana, this is the very spot where Kamadeva was burned to ashes by Shiva’s third eye, and later restored to life. As a result, Kamakhya Devi Temple is revered as a place where devotees’ desires are fulfilled through the divine blessings of the Goddess.
