We might think that the world’s tallest Durgai amman statue is in India, but unfortunately it is in Mauritius.

Contrary to what many might believe, the tallest depiction of Durgai Amman does not stand in India, but in the serene island nation of Mauritius at the sacred Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin. Rising majestically at 108 feet (33 meters), this divine form of the Mother Goddess stands as a radiant beacon of faith, power, and protection for devotees from across the world.

Ganga Talao is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites outside India. The name “Ganga Talao” itself translates to Lake of the Ganga, signifying its spiritual connection to the sacred river Ganga of Bharat (India). It is believed that the waters of this lake were sanctified with the holy waters from the Ganges, thus blessing the land with divine purity.

Upon reaching the sacred grounds, one’s heart is instantly filled with devotion at the sight of two towering deities guarding the lake, Lord Shivan and Durgai Amman. The Mangal Mahadev statue, a 33-metre tribute to Lord Shiva, mirrors the form of the great statue at Sursagar Lake in Vadodara, Gujarat, symbolizing the deep cultural bond between Mauritius and Indian.

Standing beside Him is the awe-inspiring Durgai Amman also looks high the tallest statue of the Goddess in the world. With Her ten arms radiating strength and grace, Maa Durga embodies the divine energy (Shakti) that protects the universe and upholds righteousness (Dharma).

Both these monumental creations were sculpted by the renowned Indian artist Shri Matu Ram Verma, celebrated for his magnificent depictions of divinity. Surrounding the sacred lake are smaller, vibrant shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities, each adding to the aura of devotion and serenity that envelops the place.

It is a place where the chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Jai Maa Durga” echo through the mountain breeze.
