Double the smiles, double the inspiration. That's how we could define, the twins - S. Yamuna and S. Yasoda! These 23-year-old twins may seem like your average pair of sisters, but their story is anything but ordinary. They say that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And these incredible ladies have taken thousands of steps to reach this moment.
Raised in Dengkil, Selangor, these remarkable ladies have just earned their Bachelor's Degrees in Accounting from UTM, a journey that was filled with challenges and heartache. But they never gave up, and today they stand tall as shining examples of resilience and determination.
The story of two siblings, who faced the cruellest of fates. Their father's sudden death in a road accident in 2006 shattered their world, leaving them without a guiding light. And just when they thought they had hit rock bottom, fate dealt another blow with the loss of their mother to lung cancer three years later.
Left without parents, the siblings found solace in the care of their grandparents, but fate dealt another cruel blow in 2010 when their grandfather passed away in another road accident.
But instead of letting their tragedies define them, they turned their pain into purpose. They emerged stronger, wiser, and determined to make their parents proud. Since then, the twins, along with their brother, were lovingly raised by their grandmother, A. Letchumy, now 70, whose unwavering support and sacrifices became the cornerstone of their achievements. The family relied heavily on the assistance of their uncle and monthly aid from the government and school.
“Life was incredibly difficult, but I realised early on that education was the only way to transform our situation,” shared Yamuna after the 68th UTM Convocation Ceremony.
The twins have been inseparable throughout their academic journey, studying side by side from primary school to secondary school, matriculation, and finally UTM. Their hard work and dedication earned them the prestigious Dean’s Award.
“Our grandmother is our greatest source of inspiration. Her sacrifices and encouragement to never give up kept us going, even during the darkest times,” Yamuna added.
The sisters revealed that they cultivated a disciplined study routine, often starting as early as 4 AM, supporting and motivating each other every step of the way. Their success, they said, is a tribute to their grandmother’s unconditional love and tireless devotion.
“This degree is the best gift we could give to our grandmother, who has done so much for us. We owe everything to her and to the support of our brother and uncle,” Yamuna said with pride.
Behind their wide and radiant smiles lies an unknown tale which revolves around the determination to have a successful life. Indeed, the twins’ story serves as a powerful reminder that with determination, hard work, and the support of loved ones, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome.
