An animal rights NGO has called for action to be taken against a man who was caught on video, spray painting a caged macaque.
The Malaysia Animal Crime Transparency (MyAct) shared the minute-plus video of the incident, believed to have taken place in Johor, on its Facebook page on Wednesday, and called on the public to share information about the man seen in the video.
It is not known where and when exactly the said incident had taken place, but a logo resembling the Royal Malaysian Customs Department's crest and a Johor registration number plate can be seen on a four-wheel drive vehicle seen in the video.
The macaque can be seen crying in distress as it is being spray-painted red.
According to Astro Awani, this is not the first time monkeys have been spray painted.
"Spray painting monkeys, long-tailed macaques, and pig-tailed macaques who were caught by locals for causing disturbances, is a crime, and it is not the first time this has happened.
"There have been four such cases so far this year, the latest being in Johor," a MyAct spokesperson was quoted telling the portal.
A similar case reportedly happened in April this year when a Pahang man was arrested for shooting and spray painting a monkey in Kuantan.
Under Section 86 of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, those found guilty of cruelty towards wildflife can be fined up to RM50,000, jailed for one year, or both, upon conviction.
