The Foreign Ministry has advised Malaysians to postpone non-essential travel to Jammu and Kashmir, following the revocation of the latter's special status.

"Malaysia is monitoring the situation and Kashmir. Malaysia has close and friendly relations with both India and Pakistan.

"Malaysia encourages the two close neighbours to re-engage in dialogue and negotiations to de-escalate the ongoing situation and find an amicable solution," said Wisma Putra in a statement, adding that those requiring assistance should contact the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi.

The Indian government recently revoked Article 370, a constitutional provision that accorded a special status to Jammu and Kashmir, including the right to make their own laws.

The move also involved a lift of a previous ban which barred outsiders to purchase properties and invest in Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the move, Kashmir has been put under a security lockdown, with 25,000 new troops deployed there. Internet and phone lines have also been cut.
