A screenshot of a Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) exam result, showing a pupil bearing a Chinese name scoring 8As, including for Tamil subjects, would have stumped many on social media.

Curious, Astro Ulagam managed to track down Chew Chun Kwang, 12, a pupil of SJK (T) Ladang Bukit Jenun in Pendang, Kedah, who, by the way, is a 'Chindian'. Chew's mother is Indian while his late father, Chew Swee Liong, was Chinese.

According to Chew's mother, Barathy Ramoo, Chew was theonly child out of four, who is in Tamil school, and he has always showed interest in the subject.

"His younger siblings aged 11 and 7 are both in Chinese school and can speak the language fluently. The youngest is 4.

"After his father's passing in February last year, Chew was mainly raised in my mother's house, and my brother, who is a teacher at SJK (T) Ladang Bukit Jenun, was the one who guided and prepared Chew thoroughly for the exam," she told Astro Ulagam when contacted.

Barathy added that although the family was not as optimistic, Chew was very confident that he was going to score all As in the exam.

"Weeks prior to the result, he already started telling us that he was going to get all As," she recalled.

Chew's younger siblings, including his sister who will be sitting for her UPSR next year, has a tough role model to follow, she admitted.

As for Chew, he is looking forward to be rewarded with a laptop, as promised by his uncle.

"I hope the laptop will help guide me in my studies in secondary school," he said, further thanking his family, especially his uncle for his guidance and support.

He also hopes that his younger siblings will follow in his footsteps, academically.

"My ambition is to become a pilot, and I will focus my efforts to become one," said Chew.
