A total of 17 Malaysian participants of a tabligh gathering in New Delhi last month, are being detained in India for misusing their visas.

On top of this, 191 other Malaysians who attended the same gathering, which has since become a hotspot for COVID-19 infections in the country, are being quarantined in hospitals or centres in the country.

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Kamaruddin Jaafar, the Malaysians are being detained under three acts - The National Disaster Managament Act, Foreigners Act 1946, and the Indian Penal Code.

Speaking at a press conference streamed live on Facebook yesterday, Kamaruddin said Wisma Putra is liaising with New Delhi to get the "real story" behind the issue, and will ensure the welfare of the detained and quarantined Malaysians are well taken care of.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the Indian police have brought charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Muhammad Saad Khandalvi, the chief of the Tablighi Jamaat group which organised the New Delhi event.

The quarantined Malaysians were among a larger group of people, also comprising of Indonesians and Bangladeshis, who were taken away after the authorities raided the group's headquarters in a cramped neighbourhood in Delhi and sealed the building.

Saad and his group have denied any wrongdoing.

The tabligh event has been been linked to 1,023 COVID-19 cases across 17 states - believed to have been spread by infected foreign attendees.

India has 12,380 COVID-19 cases, including 414 deaths, as of yesterday.
