Police have detained a man who was caught on closed circuit television (CCTV) footage, threatening to beat his own son with a hammer inside an apartment lift in Farlim, Penang.

George Town police chief ACP Soffian Santong was quoted telling Sinar Harian that the 42-year-old suspect was detained at 9pm last night outside his house, and the police managed to rescue the eight-year-old victim.

According to him further, the self-employed suspect has five prior criminal records, including two for drug-related crimes.

The CCTV footage showing the man, shirtless and appearing highly intoxicated, boarding the lift with his son is making its rounds on social media.

Once inside the lift, the suspect is seen knocking the lift button panel with a hammer he's holding, and repeatedly threatening to beat the boy, who's seen cowering in fear in a corner of the lift.

According to the police, the suspect and the victim were going to their house on the 16th floor, after going to a shop, when the incident happened, at an unspecified date.

He was nabbed after the suspect's estranged wife, 37, lodged a police report after viewing the disturbing CCTV footage.

The woman had been married to the suspect since 2008, but has been living apart the last few years due to domestic issues, while their son (the victim) was living with the father.

The suspect, who tested negative for drugs during his arrest, has been remanded to facilitate investigations, while the victim was taken to the Penang Hospital for further checks.
