Social media users who were taken aback with the "apply for Finas licence" for their content furore yesterday, can now breathe a sigh of relief.

"I would like to inform that the cabinet has agreed and decided that social media users are free to use existing platforms such as TikTok, Youtube and others, including producing and uploading videos as usual, as having to apply for a licence, or worry about being sued by Finas," Communications and Multimedia Saifuddin Abdullah said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Saifuddin had created a furore in the Dewan Rakyat after saying that all film producers and media agencies, as well as social media users must apply for a licence from the Malaysian National Flm Development Corporation (Finas), before filming their content.

This spawned brickbats from opposition MPs and social media users alike, who dubbed the move as impractical in the age of social media.

Today, Saifuddin said the cabinet has agreed to amend the Finas Act, taking into consideration "the current situation'.

Saifuddin added that the Malaysian government has also pledged to uphold press freedom and the right to individual freedom on social media sites.
