The government will not impose a ban on interstate travel for the upcoming Hari Raya Haji celebrations, despite the increase in COVID-19 cases.

However, the number of visitors and family members at a home celebrating the festival has to be capped at a maximum of 20, Senior Minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob told a press conference today.

According to Ismail, those who are undergoing the compulsory 14-day home quarantine are also not allowed to participate in the celebrations.

Although interstate travel is still allowed, Ismail reminded Malaysians to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) that are in place, to prevent a surge in COVID-19 cases.

There have been "fake news" being circulated on the social media, about Selangor police setting up roadblocks at state borders to deter interstate travelling this weekend. The state police have since denied doing so.

The Sarawak state government, meanwhile, has reinstated interzone movement restrictions following an increase of COVID-19 cases in the state.

Those who wish to travel between the red, yellow and green zones, require a police permit to do so. Travel within the same zone is allowed without a permit.

Sarawak, which currently has 68 active COVID-19, will also limit the number of incoming flights from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Labuan from August 1 to 14.

Malaysia so far has 8,897 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and 124 deaths from the disease.

Globally, the number of COVID-19 infections have surpassed 16.4 million, and 652,000, respectively.
