Ex-Pilot Driven To Suicide After Losing Job, Say Cops

  • 05 Aug 2020

Stress from losing his job drove a former pilot to jump to his death from a condominium in Kuala Lumpur recently, police have said.

According to Serdang police chief Ismadi Borhan, the 36-year-old man, a former pilot with a local airline, had been stressed over being laid off from his job recently.

He is then believed to have jumped from his death from the condominium unit in Puchong.

The former pilot could just be one of those badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Movement Control Order (MCO) that ensued.

A recent report in Singapore's Straits Times had said that the pandemic has caused the number of suicides in Malaysia to rise.

Police records show that there were 78 suicides nationwide from March 18 (when the MCO began) until June 9. This is a spike from the 64 suicides reported in the same period last year.

A study conducted by Malaysian think tank The Centre in April, had also found that some 45 percent of 1,084 Malaysians surveyed experienced anxiety and depression during the partial lockdown.

Besides, a total 34 percent of 4,142 calls received by the Befrienders between March 18 and May 16, were also related to the COVID-19 outbreak, and out of the number, over a third were suicidal in nature, said the Straits Times.

Women's aid groups have also recorded a spike in calls related to domestic violence during the MCO.

According to the latest official statistics, Malaysia's unemployment rate rose to 5.3 percent in May, with 826,100 Malaysians being jobless that month.
