Yet another COVID-19 cluster has broken out in Kedah, with 10 members of a same family infected with the disease. 

According to Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the new cluster in the Tawar district, involving a local businessman with a history of attending a religious memorial service in conjunction with the death of a family member. 

"The event that went on from July 31 and August 1, was estimated to have been attended by 30 people," he was quoted telling a press conference yesterday, reported The Star. 

The 53-year-old man experienced chest pains and fever on Aug 8, before immediately seeking treatment. He was diagnosed as COVID-19 positive on Tuesday.

"All the new cases in this cluster are among his family members. We have tested 86 of his close contacts - nine tested positive, 21 were negative and 56 others are still awaiting results."

Yesterday, 15 new COVID-19 cases were reported, including 11 local transmissions. The remaining four are Malaysian students returning from Indonesia and Yemen. 

Before the Tawar outbreak, Kedah was already grappling with the Sivagangga cluster, brought about by the owner of a nasi kandar restaurant who violated home quarantine rules and ended up spreading the disease to at least 49 people, across several states. 

Yesterday, the 57-year-old Indian with a permanent-resident status here was jailed five months and fined RM12,000. 

As of noon yesterday, Malaysia has recorded a total of 9,129 COVID-19 cases and 125 deaths from the disease. 

Globally, the infection and death tally from the coronavirus have surpassed 21 million and 752,000, respectively.
