Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has been made a Tan Sri.

The 57-year-old was bestowed the award today at the 2020 Federal Awards in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's birthday on June 8. The investiture ceremony was moved to this month due to the Covid-19 pandemic which forced the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) pro-chancellor Arshad Ayub were bestowed the Seri Setia Mahkota (SSM) award, which carries the title 'Tun', at the ceremony.

The other public figures who received the Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN), which carries the title 'Tan Sri', include Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali; Attorney-General Idrus Harun; Chief of Defence Force General Affendi Buang; and Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.

Dr Noor Hisham has been leading the country's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, providing almost daily updates on national TV, or press statement.

Back in April, Chinese TV station China Global TV Network (CGTN) recognised him as one of three leading doctors in the fight to curb the spread of COVID-19 worldwide, along with the US'infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci and New Zealand’s director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield.

The doctor had attributed the recognition to his team, his ministry officials and personnel, and frontliners.
