Deepavali is a festival that represents a new start and hope, and N Indira Gandhi wishes the same for her long-time suffering.

The mother of three longs to see her youngest daughter Prasana Diksa, who was forcefully taken from her by her ex-husband more than a decade ago, for the Festival of Lights in November.

"I just want to meet her. I want to hold her," the kindergarten teacher was quoted telling reporters after meeting the police at Bukit Aman yesterday.

According to Indira, she has no issues if Prasana wanted to embrace Islam.

"This is not a religion-related issue. This is the longing of a mother who has lost her daughter.

"I don't mind if my daughter wants to embrace Islam and continue practicing the religion," she was quoted.

Indira, accompanied by lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan and Indira Gandhi Action Team (Ingat) chairman Arun Dorasamy, had gone to meet Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador, but the latter could not make it as he had to attend another meeting in Putrajaya.

Indira's former husband Muhammad Riduan Abdullah, whose name prior to conversion to Islam was K Padmanathan, unilaterally converted his three children with Indira to Islam, in 2009. He took Prasana, who was just 11-months-old then, while the elder children, Tevi Darshiny, and Karan Dinesh, now 22 and 21, respectively, were left with their mother.

Following a lengthy legal battle at both the civil and syariah courts, the Federal Court in 2016 unanimously declared the conversions null and void.

The police said they have made various efforts to trace Riduan's whereabouts, including appealing for information from the public, but to no avail.

The police have maintained they know Riduan's whereabouts and are seeking to find an amicable solution to the matter.
