COVID-19: Health DG Expresses Concern Over Rise of Infections Among Healthcare Staff

  • 10 Sep 2020

There has been a rise in the number of COVID-19 infections among healthcare staff.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in expressing his concern on this trend, said the cases involved healthcare workers in both the public and private sectors.

"This is worrying because they form the backbone of the country's healthcare system.

"Investigations reveal that the majority of COVID-19 infections among healthcare staff are due to infection among themselves," Noor Hisham said in a Facebook post.

According to him, more than half (53 percent) of the infections recorded in healthcare workers, were from other healthcare workers.

Community infections and that from patients whose COVID-19 status have yet to be ascertained stand at 22 percent and 17 percent, respectively, he added.

"So far, no healthcare worker have contracted COVID-19 while handling patients stricken with the disease at the COVID-19 ward, or in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)."

Noor Hisham further stressed the importance for healthcare workers to take precautionary measures against the coronavirus, at all times.

"Always practice physical distancing at work, and keep the nurses counter, the pantry, dining areas, praying room, and the staff toilet clean.

"The ministry would also like to remind all healthcare workers working in both the public and private sectors to always wear 3-ply surgical masks when they are on duty," he said.

There has been a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country, in the last few days.

On Tuesday (Sept 8), a whopping 100 new cases were recorded, but yesterday, the number dipped to 24.

So far, there has been 9,583 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, and 128 deaths from the disease.

Globally, the infection and death tally from the disease has crossed 28 million and 907,000, respectively.
