Young Scientists Bag Yet Another Gold, in London Invention Expo

  • 15 Sep 2020

There seems to be no stopping three pupils from SJK (T) Taman Melawati, who have bagged yet another gold medal in another international competition, with their "My Soil, My Plant" invention.

This time, the young inventors - Yuvika Mahaganapathy, 10, Kailesh Saravana, 11, and Kavisha Nagarajan, 11, beat 400 other contestants from 27 countries, by winning the Young Scientist Award 2020 at the International Invention and Trade Expo (ITE) in London, which was held online recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The "My Soil, My Plant" is an invention which matches plants with the type of soil they are best cultivated on. It comprises a device, which when stuck into the soil, will list down in an app connected to it, the type of plants that can be cultivated on the soil.

The device has been patented following its highly successful run, and negotiations are on the way to commercialise it.

For the record, the three pupils also bagged the top prize in the International Innovation Competition in Canada, also via remote participation, back in July. They also came out on top at the Malaysia Young Scientist Conference & Exhibition last month.

It is the team's sixth gold medal since last year. They had won four golds and two silvers in tournaments last year - in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of their school.

Yuvika's father Dr Mahaganapathy Dass was elated over his daughter's, and her team's latest victory, reported The Star.

“As a father, I am very proud of their achievement. They have worked very hard as a team during the movement control order (MCO), meeting every day using Zoom. They deserve all the recognition and accolades they get, ” he added, saying that the children spent five months to come up with their innovation of a soil testing tool.

The young champions' next stop will be the 31st International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition, Malaysia (ITEX), which will be held on Nov 21 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Kudos to the three young scientists. They have proved that the sky is the limit to what one can do with focus, hardwork and perserverance.

All the best to them for winning more medals in the future!
