The government has advised against the buying of cheap masks, as they can cause more detriment than good for the user. 

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Deputy Minister Rosol Wahid said the ministry has detected the sales of face masks priced as low as 50 sen each, but are of below-standard quality. 

"This face mask is priced at 50 sen per unit and the seller claims it is a three-layer face mask. However, the inspection found that the material used was quite dubious. 

"It is dusty and can affect the health of users," Rosol was quoted telling by Bernama. 

According to him, the ministry could set a regulation to ensure that only masks that are up to the set standards, can be sold to customers. 

The government last month set the ceiling price of three-ply face masks at RM1 each. 

This after the wearing of face masks in public was made mandatory, following the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country. 

Those who fail to abide with the ruling are issued with a RM1,000 compound. 

The number of COVID-19 cases has crossed the 10,000 mark, with a total of 10,031 infections reported as of noon yesterday, with 128 deaths. 

The global infection and death tally from the coronavirus has surpassed 30 million and 945,000, respectively.
