Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim today announced that he has the parliamentary majority to form the federal government.

In a press conference in the afternoon, the PKR president refused to reveal the supposed majority that he has, but said he will be meeting Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah soon regarding the matter.

The King is currently being warded at the Royal Ward of the National Heart Centre (IJN), after complaining of feeling under the weather yesterday, but is expected to be discharged soon.

The Port Dickson MP also claimed that with his backing, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's government has fallen, and urged the latter to cooperate in allowing a smooth transition.

"Conclusively, we have a strong, formidable majority. I'm not talking about four, five six. I'm talking more than that. They are MPs from various parties. Strong, formidable, convincing majority. Not a small majority," said Anwar.

According to Anwar, Malaysians deserve a strong government with an efficient and confident leadership.

"It is our responsibility to save this country from an economic downfall that could affect interracial ties," he said.

Sin Chew Daily, had in a recent report quoting sources, said that Anwar has the backing of 123 Members of Parliament out of 222 in Dewan Rakyat, and he has relayed the message to the Pakatan Harapan leadership at a meeting last night.

The report further claimed that besides securing the backing of Sarawak ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Anwar has also gained the support of several Umno lawmakers.

According to other reports, the backing for Anwar does not include former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Pejuang faction, as well as Sabah's Warisan.

Meanwhile, in a statement later, Muhyiddin said Anwar should substantiate his claim of having the majority support, via means stipulated in the Federal Constitution.

Otherwise, Anwar's statement is merely a claim, and until proven otherwise, he is the legitimate prime minister, Muhyiddin stressed, further urging the people to remain calm.
