Anwar Meets Agong Over 'Majority Support' Claim, Urges Patience From Rakyat

  • 13 Oct 2020

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has presented a set of documents to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, that allegedly shows that he has majority support from MPs to form a new government.

In a press conference at the Le Meridien Hotel in Kuala Lumpur , Anwar urged the rakyat to display patience and wisdom in giving the King, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah time to scrutinize the documents before deciding on the next step.

The Port Dickson MP had earlier today, held an audience with the Agong at Istana Negara, but left without speaking to the media, who had gathered in droves outside the palace.

In the press conference, Anwar reiterated his stance on Sept 23, that he has a "strong, formidable majority" to form the next government, and as such, the government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen.

In his Sept 23 press conference, Anwar had urged Muhyiddin to allow a smooth transition to take place.

Although Anwar did not mention the number of MPs who were allegedly backing him then, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi raised eyebrows when he issued a statement in response, admitting that many of the party’s MPs were backing Anwar.

The audience with Agong, however, could not take place then as the Ruler was then warded at the Royal Ward of the National Heart Centre (IJN), after complaining of feeling under the weather.

Muhyiddin, meanwhile, replied to Anwar by saying that he should substantiate his claim of having the majority support, via means stipulated in the Federal Constitution, or his statements are merely claims.
