Klang Deepavali Bazaar Called Off This Year Due to COVID-19

  • 13 Oct 2020

Come Deepavali season, it would be a "tradition" for most Indians to head to Klang for its 'colourful' Deepavali bazaar.

However, it would be a muted celebration for the community this year, as the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has called off the bazaar, due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the district.

Selangor Journal quoted MPK president Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin saying that move to cancel the bazaar, scheduled to be held at Lorong Tingkat, was made to curb the spread of the virus in the district, which has been classified as a red zone.

According to the Health Ministry's classification, a red zone is an area with more than 40 active cases of COVID-19. On the other end of the spectrum is the green zone, with no cases, while there are also yellow and orange zones in between.

"Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has disrupted our daily lives, the opening of the bazaar site for the Deepavali celebration this year had to be reviewed.

"Following to the recent spike in cases in Klang, MPK has decided not to proceed with the bazaar this year," Ahmad Fadzli reportedly said in a statement, according to Selangor journal.

As of Monday (Oct 12), there are 109 active COVID-19 cases in the district.

Following the rise in the number of cases, the government has put Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya, under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), from tomorrow (Oct 14), until Oct 27.

Last month, the Negeri Sembilan state government cancelled the annual 10-day state-level Deepavali carnival, also out of concern for the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of Monday afternoon, a total of 16,220 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the country, as well as 159 deaths.

The global infection and death tally from the virus have surpassed 38 million and 1.08 million, respectively.
