COVID-19: 63 Infected So Far In 1 Utama Cluster

  • 15 Oct 2020

The 1 Utama Shopping Centre cluster in Petaling Jaya has grown to 63, as of yesterday - the majority of them involving security personnel and workers of the mall.

Petaling district disaster management committee chairman Johary Anuar said that 16 of the mall workers and 44 security personnel were confirmed to be COVID-19 positive. The remaining three cases involve shoppers at the mall.

Initially, four cases, involving three mall workers and a visitor, were detected, forcing the shut down of the mall for two weeks from Oct 11.

Its management then conducted COVID-19 screening on some 6,000 mall workers, resulting in the current find.

The security company at the mall must now hire new security personnel, who must not be close contacts of the positive patients, and undergo COVID-19 tests before they are allowed to start work," Johary reportedly said in a statement, according to the New Straits Times.

Besides workers, the mall management has also started screening mall visitors who had visited the premises on the dates the infected workers were present.

New COVID-19 cases have been consistently recorded in the three-digits in the last week, with daily deaths to boot, as the country, like the rest of the world, undergoes the third wave of the pandemic.

As of yesterday, there have been 17,540 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, and 167 deaths.

Globally, the disease has infected more than 38.7 million people and killed over 1.09 million.
