COVID-19: Indian Engineer Kills Himself Due to Work From Home Stress

  • 23 Oct 2020

An electrical engineer in Gujarat, India, has committed suicide out of stress from working from home during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Times of India reported that the 32-year-old, identified as Jigar Gandhi, had returned home from his working place in Haryana two months ago, and had been working from home since.

Jigar's family had told the police that he had complained of stress due to working from home, prior to him hanging himself from a railing of a staircase leading to his room at the family home, last Tuesday.

Jigar is not alone in his predicament.

A recent study by India's National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) said that there has been a 70 percent spike in the number of patients suffering from depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, during the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

India currently places second to the US, in the list of countries with the highest number of COVID-19 cases, with over 7.75 million cases, and more than 117,000 deaths.

The global COVID-19 infection and death tally continues to surge beyond 41.9 million, and 1.14 million, respectively.
