The cabinet has agreed to implement an "emergency" to handle the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country.

According to Malaysiakini, the decision was reached during a special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin this morning.

The premier is also reportedly seeking an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Pahang this evening, to seek the latter's consent on the matter.

Meanwhile, Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported that the emergency will apply especially to COVID-19 red zones, such as Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Sabah.

Among the reasons senior government officials are pushing for the measure is to prevent the triggering of a "Parliament cluster", when the Dewan Rakyat sitting convenes on Nov 2 to Dec 15, and to reduce the political instability plaguing the country.

If the emergency motion goes through, it means the parliament will be suspended and the Budget 2021 announcement will also be postponed.

A source also told FMT that the emergency will be similar to the Movement Control Order (MCO) back in March, with more restrictions imposed on movements. The army will again be roped in to assist the police to man roadblocks.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country has been averaging above 800 daily, over the last few days.

As of yesterday, there have been a total of 23,804 confirmed COVID-19 infections and 204 deaths reported in the country.

The global infection and death tally from the coronavirus has surpassed 42 million and 1.14 million, respectively.
