Teens As Young As 15 Suffer From Depression, Study Shows

  • 05 Nov 2020

Teenagers as young as 15-years-old are among those who suffered from depression, due to academic and social struggles.

This was among the findings in the 2019 National Health and Morbidity Survey, reported Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

The portal quoted Befrienders publicity director Ardy Ayadali saying that of the 500,000 Malaysians who reportedly suffered from depression last year, 108,919 were youths aged between 15 and 24, and that calls made by those aged below 28 also made up 33% of the distress calls Befrienders received last year.

According to Ardy, youths were more likely to get depressed over academic and social matters, and suffer from low self-esteem and poor interpersonal skills, causing them to have poor relationships with friends and family.

Older people, howevere, reportedly experienced emotional distress due to working from home or had suffered the loss of income.

The portal also spoke to Sheila Menon, principal of the London College of Clinical Hypnosis Asia, who revealed that the rate of suicidal thoughts among youths had gone up to 10%, from 7.9%, in recent years.

She urged a young person's family, especially the parents, to play a proactive role in ensuring the wellbeing of the affected person.

It has been previously reported that distress calls and suicide cases has spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
