Spike In Number of Indian Students Enrolled in Chinese Schools

The number of Indian students enrolling in Chinese vernacular schools has shown an upward trend in the last 10 years. 

Free Malaysia Today (FMT) quoted Education Minister Radzi Jidin telling Parliament in a written reply that 2.75% Indian students enrolled in Chinese vernacular schools in 2020, compared to 1.67% in 2010. 

According to the report further, the enrolment of Malay students in Chinese schools has also increased from 9.15% in 2010 to 15.33% in 2020. 

The percentage of Chinese students' enrolment in Chinese vernacular schools meanwhile, showed a decrease from 88.16% in 2010 to 80.25% in 2020. 

Radzi also revealed that the Chinese made up the majority in private schools, with 65.88%, followed by Malays and Bumiputeras in Sabah and Sarawak with 26.9%, as well as Indians and other races with 4% and 3.17% respectively. 

The number of Chinese and Indian students getting enrolled in national schools has also dropped from 1.17% and 3.15% to 0.73% and 2.63%, respectively, in the last 10 years. 

As for Tamil schools, the majority (99%) comprised of Indian students, while other races made up the remaining one precent.
