Police have fined a 30-year-old man RM1,200 for transporting a banana tree in a car, in Skudai, Johor, on Saturday.

A video clip of the car, with the long tree dangerously sticking out of the rear window, has recently gone viral on social media.

After the video went viral, police contacted the owner of the Toyota Vios, who was in Singapore.

"The owner's son came to the police station to provide a statement at 8.30pm, saying the vehicle was driven by his cousin and the banana tree was for a prayer ceremony in Mutiara Rini," Bernama quoted Iskandar Puteri district police Dzulkhairi Mukhtar saying in a statement.

The driver turned up at the Iskandar Puteri police station last night to give his statement, and police found he has 18 outstanding traffic summonses, including four arrest warrants and 10 non-compoundable summonses.

He was then taken to the Johor Bahru Magistrate's Court to settle six outstanding summonses worth a total of RM1,200.

The car, which also had an expired road tax, was confiscated by the police.
