Police will call up the organisers of the gathering outside the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex during former premier Najib Razak's case decision on Tuesday, where no social distancing was practiced.

According to The Star, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Mazlan Mansor said this after a member of the public lodged a police report over the gathering today.

"We are investigating the matter and are aware of the public outcry.

"They did not comply with the conditions, especially on social distancing," Mazlan was quoted telling reporters after launching the Sentul police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

He added that the organisers had informed the police that about 900 people will gather outside the court, but the flouting of the Health Ministry's standard operating procedures (SOPs) to contain the spread of COVID-19 was unanticipated.

"Maybe they were excited in the moment, but they should have known better.

"We should be taking care of each other especially during the Covid-19 pandemic," Mazlan said.

Hundreds of Najib supporters gathered outside the court complex in Jalan Duta yesterday, where Najib was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million over seven charges pertaining to the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to SRC International, a former subsidiary of the scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Some supporters were ferried in buses from as far as Najib's constituency of Pekan in Pahang. No social distancing was practiced during the gathering and the crowd also ignored warning by the police to abide by the SOPs. There were also members of the crowd who did not wear face masks.

Pictures of the crowd quickly went viral on social media and Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah took to Facebook to express his disappointment at the scenario.

"The Health Ministry has been constantly reminding Malaysians to adhere to standard operating procedures, which cover one-metre social distancing, the wearing of face masks, and washing hands regularly.

"It is sad to see lack of self-control in this situation," he wrote, while sharing a photo of the gathering.
