Former MIC vice-president KS Nijhar has passed away, aged 85.

The politician, whose full name is Karnail Singh Nijhar, was the highest-ranking Sikh member of the Tamil-dominated MIC, reported The Vibes.

He had reportedly suffered a stroke and was unable to recover due to his age, before passing on at 8pm last night.

Born in Pengkalan Hulu, Perak in 1936, Nijhar was appointed in 1980 by then MIC president Tun S Samy Vellu to chair the party's economic and education bureaus.

He also later served as the parliamentary secretary to the International and Industry Ministry from 1989 to 1991.

Nijhar contested and won the Subang parliamentary seat twice - in 1999 and 2004.

Our deepest condolences to the veteran politician's family.
