The government is extending discounts on electrity bills until December this year.

Energy and Natural Resources Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, in a statement, said the extension will benefit up to 7.66 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysua and more than half a million users, in Sabah and Sarawak respectively.

The initial discount, announced under the Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package, was supposed to end in October.

Shamsul Anuar said for those in the peninsula, the three-month extension will also benefit users whose electrity usage is between 601 and 900kWj, who had been enjoying a 10 percent discount under the Bantuan Prihatin Elektrik (BPE) scheme announced on June 20.

"Domestic users in Sabah and Sarawak will continiue enjoying discounts of two percent on their electric bills until December 31, 2020," he said.

The total costs involved in offering electricity bills from April to December this year is RM2.62 billion, he added.

The announcement comes amid the public outcry over a sudden spike in electrity bills during the Movement Control Order (MCO). This after Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) suspensed meter reading activities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
