The government will lower the retail price of three-ply face masks to RM1 per piece, while the wholesaler cost will be 95 sen each.

According to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi, the move was in line with the government's mandatory for people to wear face masks in crowded places and public transportation.

"As a caring government that is sensitive towards the people's need, I like to inform that as for now, the face mask supply is adequate and the production has been heightened.

"The move to lower the ceiling price of face masks is a soft landing approach to allow available stocks that have been flown in earlier at a higher cost can be sold to reduce the losses," he was quoted telling Dewan Rakyat, reported the New Straits Times.

The government was willing to further lower the price if need be, in the future, he added.

Earlier, the government had agreed to set the maximum price of three-ply face masks to RM1.50 each, and later lowered it to RM1.20 each, from August 15.

Those who flout the wear mask in public places ruling are fined RM1,000 now.

The ruling was brought about by the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country, which to date, stands at 9,094 infections and 125 deaths.
