Hydrogen Inhalers : MOH Warns Claims of Treating Heart Disease and Diabetes Are Unproven

Hydrogen Inhalers : MOH Warns Claims of Treating Heart Disease and Diabetes Are Unproven

Hydrogen inhalers have recently been gaining attention on social media in Malaysia, with some sellers promoting them as a treatment for serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

But the Ministry of Health (MOH) is urging Malaysians, particularly older people, to be cautious before believing or paying for such claims.

So, what exactly is a hydrogen inhaler?

A hydrogen inhaler, sometimes referred to as a hydrogen machine, is a device designed to produce hydrogen gas for a person to breathe in. The gas is marketed by some sellers as having potential health or wellness benefits.

However, claims that inhaling hydrogen can treat or cure conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure have not been established as proven medical treatments. MOH has therefore advised the public not to rely on such products as an alternative to proper medical care, particularly when dealing with serious or chronic illnesses.

The ministry also highlighted concerns over videos circulating online that promote hydrogen inhalers with claims of treating various diseases. Some sales activities were reportedly using high-pressure tactics and emotional appeals, particularly when targeting older Malaysians.

More importantly, MOH said the device in question has not been approved by the Medical Device Authority (MDA).

Under Malaysia's Medical Device Act 2012 (Act 737), medical devices that are sold or used in the country must be registered with the MDA. The ministry warned that selling, distributing or advertising an unregistered medical device may constitute an offence and could lead to enforcement action.

MOH is also reminding consumers not to assume that a product is safe or effective simply because it is promoted widely on social media or accompanied by testimonials.

Before purchasing any medical device, members of the public are advised to check its registration status through the MDA's official platform.

The ministry also urged Malaysians to seek advice from registered medical practitioners before using products that claim to prevent, treat or cure medical conditions. For those who come across the sale of unregistered medical devices or advertisements making misleading health claims, complaints can be submitted to MOH or the MDA.
