The biennial Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) will not take place next year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, the defence ministry said that it, along with the transport ministry, as the main sponsors of the event which was supposed to be held from March 16 to 20 next year, decided to call it off due to economic and health concerns.

"We are aware of the pandemic's impact on the global economy, as well as the health and social aspects.

"Another factor is time constraint. To organise such a big-scale event as this during these challenging conditions will require a lot of time due to the detailed planning, including for carrying out promotional activities and publicity so that we can get the targeted participation," said the statement.

With the pandemic still posing a threat to the world, there will be fewer participants at the event, and thus, there will not be good return on investment, added the statement.

LIMA is held once every two years in Langkawi, Kedah. It is one of the largest maritime and aerospace exhibitions in the Asia-Pacific, and every event attract hundreds of exhibitors and delegations from both the defence and commercial sectors, as well as hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world.
