The Makkal Sakti political party is gearing up to contest in the 15th general election (GE15).

This after the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition agreed to give a shot to the party as a reward for its 13 years of loyalty, its president RS Thanenthiran said.

"Yes, we are preparing to contest. This is courtesy BN which has agreed to give us a chance to (contest) in return to our loyalty, when a lot of other parties quit the coalition after its loss in the 14th general election," Malay daily Sinar Harian quoted him saying.

According to Thanenthiran, Makkal Sakti has candidates with the caliber to contest, including youths who have been groomed to take on leadership roles.

Makkal Sakti is founded by former Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders. Although it is not part of BN, the party has been supportive of the coalition for years.

BN chairman cum Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently said that the coalition may field candidates from Makkal Sakti in GE15.

His statement came after MIC president SA Vigneswaran called for Zahid's replacement as BN chairman in the midst of the Malay party's spat with the Registrar of Societies (RoS), regarding its legitimacy.
