Buntong teenager V. Naveenkumar recently scored an impressive 8As and 1B in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam, but his father is concerned of his chance for further studies.

G Vijayakumaran is proud with his son's achievement, but worried at the same time about whether he could raise the funds and a laptop needed for higher education, due to his inconsistent income as a mechanic, reported Free Malaysia Today (FMT).

"There was a time when I didn’t have a single motorcycle to repair, forcing me to take on part-time jobs. Naveenkumar would always help me fix customers’ motorcycles.

"I always wonder if I will be able to give my children the best. There were times that I couldn’t even give my children pocket money for school," Vijayakumaran was quoted telling the portal.

According to the report, the 50-year-old used to work as a mechanic at a factory for 13 years, before an accident left him with a broken leg, and two weeks' of medical leave. To compound the situation, he was fired from his job when he took just an additional day off.

Since then, Vijayakumaran has been repairing motorcycles from his home in Ipoh, Perak, to provide for the family, while his wife, A. Deivaletchumy also helps out by working at a nearby factory.

Vijayakumaran also signs Tamil songs at functions for additional income, but it does not suffice.

"My son will be applying to go to university, so he will need some money for the deposit and a laptop. We’re hoping that someone will be able to help," the concerned father lamented.

Naveenkumar is the second child in the family, while his elder sister Janani is currently studying chemical engineering at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap). She also previously scored 8As in her SPM.

As the saying goes that education is a ticket out of poverty, the concerned parents are now banking on their children to provide a better future for the family.
