Merdeka Weekend: Traffic Controls, Road Closures Announced Across KL and Putrajaya

Motorists heading to Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya during the Merdeka weekend are advised to plan their journeys early as police prepare for large crowds, traffic diversions and road closures linked to the 69th Merdeka and National Day celebrations.

Thousands of people are expected to attend National Day festivities, fireworks and public events on 30 and 31 August 2026. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will step up security and traffic-control operations at major celebration venues and surrounding areas.

In Kuala Lumpur, police will focus on major public hotspots and gathering areas as part of crime-prevention and security operations.

Traffic controls will be implemented around Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Sunway Velocity, where large crowds are expected. Members of the public heading into the city to watch fireworks and the planned drone show near Kuala Lumpur Tower are advised to check their travel routes and allow additional time for their journeys.

Putrajaya is expected to welcome around 80,000 visitors for the National Day celebrations. A total of 2,357 police officers and personnel will be deployed to manage security and traffic throughout the celebrations.

Several roads in Putrajaya will be closed in stages for rehearsals and the main National Day celebration.

During the skeleton rehearsal from 26 to 28 August, Persiaran Perdana will be fully closed between Jalan Kemerdekaan and Lebuh Bestari.

On 28 and 29 August, from 6am to 12 noon, the following roads will be closed:

• Persiaran Putra

• Persiaran Perdana

• Persiaran Dataran Wawasan

• Jalan P2A

• Jalan P2T

• Jalan P2S

• Jalan P2W

• Jalan P2Y

A wider road closure will then take effect from 5am on 30 August until 6pm on 31 August, covering Putrajaya’s Core Island area. Five major bridges will also be closed during this period:

• Seri Wawasan Bridge

• Seri Saujana Bridge

• Seri Gemilang Bridge

• Putra Bridge

• Seri Ehsan Bridge

Seri Bestari Bridge and Seri Setia Bridge will remain open.

The public is reminded that Putrajaya is a prohibited area for drone operations during the National Day preparations and celebrations from 25 to 31 August. Drone operators must obtain approval from the relevant authorities before conducting any flights. Police warned that strict action may be taken against those who operate drones without permission under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016.

Residents in Putrajaya and surrounding areas should not be alarmed if they hear cannon shots on 29 and 31 August. The cannon salutes, conducted by the Malaysian Armed Forces, are part of the official National Day programme.

They will take place at Lot 3C1, Precinct 3, at the Putrajaya Ramadan Bazaar site. The scheduled cannon salutes are:

• 29 August, 8am – Two cannon shots during the full rehearsal

• 31 August, 8am – Fourteen cannon shots on National Day

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and use public transport wherever possible. Free shuttle bus services will also be available where applicable, with the latest public transport information to be shared through Putrajaya Corporation’s official social media channels.

Police have advised members of the public to follow all security instructions, avoid bringing prohibited or dangerous items, keep their belongings secure and refrain from parking in restricted areas or locations that could obstruct traffic.
